Portland Harbour was one of the country’s prime naval bases. In WW2 it was an embarkation for the great D-Day landings in 1944 when half a million Allied troops and their vehicles came to Portland and Weymouth to be loaded onto their craft destined for France.

Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee, OM, KBE, FRS, FREng, FRSA is a British engineer and computer scientist and MIT professor credited with inventing the World Wide Web, making the first proposal for it in March 1989. Sir Tim lived for many years in Wimborne, Dorset.
