Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are two of the most accessible places from which to see the spectacular rock formations of the eastern end of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Easily accessible by car and with large car parks at each venue with the added bonus of the pay and display car park ticket being valid in both car parks, so you can take a stop off to wonder at the beautiful views of Durdle Door and then travel on to Lulworth Cove for a bite to eat and the take in the views from there without having to pay again! This is a great idea and a shame it’s not taken up by a few more places in Dorset.
You won’t find a great deal at Durdle Door except for wonderful views and a terrific cliff backed beach although there is usually a refreshment caravan half way between the car park and the beach during the holiday season. Be warned though the walk down to the beach is not for the faint hearted a long gently sloping path takes you from the car park to the cliffs that surround the beach and from there you’ll find steps down to the beach. The walk back from Durdle Door beach to the car park nearly always seems to take twice as long but once you’ve made it although you may be breathless you’ll be glad you made the effort because all around you you’ll have taken in some of the most beautiful coastal views in Dorset.
Nearby Lulworth Cove is in the pretty village of West Lulworth. Some may say it is a little commercialised but this is only really because of the good number of Pubs and Restaurants to be found there. It does get pretty busy though so get there in good time if you want a table for lunch. You’ll find some good quality gift shops in the village and an Heritage Centre which quite brilliantly explains the fascinating geology of this part of the Dorset coast. You’ll a number of cosy B and B’s, Small Hotels and Pubs with accommodation in Lulworth more details can be found on The Purbeck Resort Guide.
For a real taste of Dorset and to sample some of the best real ales and ciders in the West Country take a look at the dog friendly Castle Inn .
Plenty of events take place in and around Lulworth during the year many centred around Lulworth Castle which sits at the heart of the Lulworth Estate. Here as well as the castle and castle park you’ll find plenty for the children to do at the Animal Farm. You will find lots more information on the Lulworth Estate web site including details of events and educational activities.
