Think of all the amazing things you know about Dorset – and share with us what they are to help mark 1,000 days to go until the start of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 1000 day countdown begins on Saturday 31st October 2009, and we are going to be telling the world just what makes our county of Dorset so special. This period will see a remarkable build up of celebrations, marking Dorset’s involvement as the host county of the sailing events for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are  being held in Weymouth and Portland.

This will involve gathering at least 1,000 interesting facts about Dorset, one of which will be displayed on the Team Dorset website and other leading sites each day until the start of the Games in July 2012. The information will be used to inspire and generate national and international media coverage, further raising the profile of the county; and promoted in media centres for major events in the lead up to and during the Games.

Simon Raynes, Vice Chair Olympic Legacy Committee, Dorset Strategic Partnership, said “Dorset people seem to be shy when saying what makes them great. This is a tremendous way for us to find out things which demonstrate the versatility and talent present in our county. I cannot wait to see these facts emerge as the countdown to the event continues”.

The facts we would like to be included have been arranged in five different categories:

  • Heritage and Culture
  • Food
  • Sport
  • People
  • Business

The facts themselves should be kept fairly short, for example:

  • Heritage & Culture: part of the Dorset Coastline was awarded World Heritage status for its Jurassic Coast
  • Food: Dorset is the home of the hottest chilli ever measured – the Dorset Naga.
  • Sport: The World record for Bog Snorkelling is currently held by Weymouth girl Casey Squibb
  • People: Sir Christopher Wren, architect of St Paul’s Cathedral, was elected MP for the area in 1702
  • Business: Gundry’s in Bridport provide the nets for Wimbledon
